Afternoon Trees

Oil, 16″ x 20″

It’s so fun creating a scene

that evokes a certain flavor or feeling.

The afternoon sun casts shadows

and creeps over the hills to lighten the land.

Country Road

Oil, 8″ x 10″

Fresh off the easel, this image of a country road

reminds me of our family’s homestead in rural Virginia.

It also makes me think of songs by James Taylor and

John Denver. What comes to your mind?

Arizona Spring

Pastel, 6″ x 8″

The pastel’s tactile quality especially on excellent

pastel paper, is simply sensuous and joyful.

I had ordered just three new soft pastels and

some new paper, all of which arrived today,

and started painting as soon as I unwrapped them.

This painting came together after toning the canvas with

Quinacridone Magenta.

You can see where I left some of that original toning paint untouched.

This is a universal sunset; it could be anywhere.

Southwest Vista

I often comment on what a joy making art is for me.
Now, not always is this the case! Yesterday I painted for several hours, and am not happy with anything from that whole session.
But this one…I love it and I loved creating it.
It evolved from an initial painting that looked nothing like this finished product.
There are many layers of traditional oil paint
as well as many layers of pure pigment oil paint on this canvas.
It must go to a good home.

20″ x 24″ Oil

A cheerful image to represent the promise

of the coming spring,

the promise of new life,

this one was a joy to create.
