Perfect Beach Day

Watercolor, approximately 6″x12″

While at the beach last month I did a few watercolor paintings,

enjoying my other medium.

I like this one because of the texture of sand, gentle surf, and peek of a sun in the clouds.

Sand in my Toes 2

11″ x 14″ Oil on Canvas

This beach scene is painted with exuberant color and dynamic brushstrokes

to express the rich flavor of a Florida beach.

The distant blue of the ocean, the nearer shallow water aquamarine,

the grasses swaying in the breeze:

all translates to joy and life.

Late Afternoon Colors

Watercolor, approximately 6″x12″

So many colors are found in the sand and sky in the late afternoon

at the beach.

Sometimes the artist just pushes the color she sees a little bit,

and magic happens.

Mini Sea Oats

4″ x 6″ Oil, $25

This miniature oil painting says a lot within a small space.

The sun is shining in the southeast sky

making blue shadows in the dunes.

The farther dune is illuminated brightly.

Shadowed Sand Dune

12″ x 12″ Oil

Fascinated as I am with the many colors of sand

when shadowed,

I never tire of expressing this loveliness with paint on canvas.

The bright sun and contrasting dark shadows cast by clouds

provide the painting’s focus.

Clouds and Shimmer

Oil, 6″x6″

As my painting retreat at the beach comes to a close,

I’m finishing up some final paintings.

The bright reflections juxtaposed with dark beaches –

a result of cloudy skies –

are endlessly appealing.

I delight in gazing at the beauty of nature

as well as in attempting to express it on canvas.

Sand Dunes 2

6″x8″ Oil

In order to get from the rental beach house to the beach each day,

I must navigate a couple of mildly steep sand dunes.

As I plod up and down the soft loose ground,

keeping an eye out for Florida critters,

I marvel at the beautiful lit colors the sun gives

to simple sand.

Low Tide

6″x6″ Oil

Having just enjoyed  a long walk on the beach,

I came back to the house to paint.

I wanted to capture the luminescent reflection

of the sky on the incoming water.

Also the reflection on the sand and many blues of the sky.

I wanted my painting to shimmer.
