The Beach Connection

Oil, 6″ x 6″

This small painting evokes the watery, cool atmosphere

of walking on a beach. At least I hope it does for my viewers.

Two people have just met, having walked from opposite directions,

or two people started out together and are now discussing something

rather passionately. You decide.

Storm Clouds

6″x8″ Oil

The ocean, the clouds, the breaking waves –

all are endlessly fascinating and soothing to me.

Living here in the desert, missing the coast

every day,

it helps to paint and “be there”

if only in my imagination.

Ocean Breeze

I spent September of 2017 at the beach painting in watercolors,

and find myself returning to gentle images and soft painting strokes.

Ponte Vedra

4″ x 10″ Watercolor, $75 + shipping

Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, is another

gorgeous and favorite beach. I have

quite the collection of sharks’ teeth that

I’ve found there over the years.

As for the painting,

I intentionally wanted to keep this

beachscape simple and on the abstract side.

I like the viewer to participate in the artwork.

5″ x 7″ Watercolor, $75

Painting with watercolor on Yupo paper

was a brand new experience for me.

I had the good fortune to spend a month

in Fernandina Beach, FL, this past September.

I took watercolors on this trip since

they’re easier to transport than oils,

I wanted to explore watercolor techniques.

9″ x 12″ Oil, $200

Inspired by a photo taken by Grant Ferguson in Montana,

this painting came together thoughtfully, stroke by stroke.

I’m pleased with the abstract/representational tension,

as well as the feeling of mist.

This could be anywhere, so I titled it, “Somewhere.”

7:16:15 Beach COCO? 18:24

18″ x 24″, Oil, $800

As you know, I could paint the ocean and the beach everyday,

and not get tired of the subject.

Especially when it’s 108 degrees outside as it is now, here in the desert.

As I prepare for my new position as Art Teacher for grades K-2 and 6-8

I haven’t had as much time to paint.

But this is my latest, and I’m pretty happy with it.

I can almost feel the powdery sand all over my feet,

and almost hear the comforting sound of the surf.
