Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, is another
gorgeous and favorite beach. I have
quite the collection of sharks’ teeth that
I’ve found there over the years.
As for the painting,
I intentionally wanted to keep this
beachscape simple and on the abstract side.
I like the viewer to participate in the artwork.

Inspired by a photo taken by Grant Ferguson in Montana,
this painting came together thoughtfully, stroke by stroke.
I’m pleased with the abstract/representational tension,
as well as the feeling of mist.
This could be anywhere, so I titled it, “Somewhere.”

With painted edges this one is ready to hang as is.
The subject of a solitary person looking out over the sea
is a favorite of mine.
I long to be there especially on this day of 114 degree heat
in the Valley of the Sun.
Painting the cooling colors of the sea and the shadows on land
transport me to an ever-enthralling place.

Painting 34 of CHALLENGE 56
Countless layers of paint make up this scene, as did
Four days of painting, scraping, paper-towelling,
lightly adding layers, and ever so slightly tweaking,
and finally I think I found the stopping point.
I wanted to show the reflection of the sky on the wet sand,
as well as the grasses on the border of the beach.
And I wanted to achieve some abstraction
while developing a softer beach scene.
Lastly, I worked for color harmony.
